The 22nd edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2022 was held virtually, with the theme “Towards a Resilient Planet: Ensuring a Sustainable and Equitable Future.” The summit was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and featured a thematic track on “Responsible Climate Action Towards a Low Carbon & Resilient Pathway: An Inclusive Worldview.” Mr. A K Saxena, Senior Director of TERI, highlighted the continued reliance on coal for electricity generation and its economic benefits, while also addressing the adverse effects of coal on health and the environment. He emphasized the need to transition from “imagining beyond coal” to “thinking beyond coal,” aligning with India’s Net Zero target.
The thematic track underscored India’s dependence on coal, which accounts for more than 70% of its energy supply, and the challenges of transitioning to cleaner energy alternatives. The discussion highlighted the importance of a just transition that considers the socio-economic dimensions and the diverse stakeholders involved. Proposed solutions included bio-ethanol production, horticulture, and renewable energy projects like solar irrigation. The need for local engagement, micro-financing, and leveraging resources from flagship programs was emphasized to ensure a sustainable and equitable transition. The summit concluded with Mr. Sanjay Mitra, Distinguished Fellow at TERI, reflecting on the rich insights shared by the panelists, which will guide future policies and research on just transition and climate justice.
