About Us

TERI’s Just Transition Team works within the Energy Programme of the institute, with a focus on inclusive and people-centric energy transitions for a sustainable future.

TERI’s work in the just energy transition space began in 2021 with studies on the vulnerability created by coal dependence in the form of loss of employment and revenue with the closure of coal mines. This was followed by a study on the impact of coal mine closure in Betul, Madhya Pradesh. These activities allowed a deeper dive into the complexities of coal producing geographies, through in-depth interaction with a wide range of stakeholders in the coal value chain in the coal rich regions of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. Outputs so far have included a pioneering piece of research on the need for a gender-just transition in India’s coal mining regions and a just transition framework tailored to the needs of coal mining regions. These key research works have been well recognised by key policy makers, researchers, and other actors – establishing a foundation for future ground level demonstrations for people centric transitions.

Through research rooted in the ground reality, the Just Transition team aims to provide evidence backed solutions and a blueprint for a greener and cleaner future in India.
